As autumn begins to unfurl and pumpkins begin to appear on porches, it’s time to start thinking about a holiday marked by candy and costumes. There is no other day in the year that you’ll take your kids door to door in your neighborhood asking for candy– it’s Halloween.

Halloween provides the perfect opportunity to dress up the whole family in cute or hilarious costume ensembles. Whether you’ve been planning this since November 1st of last year, or need some last-minute inspiration, we’re here to help. Here are some of our favorite ideas to coordinate your family for this year’s neighborhood candy hunt.

Going to the Movies

A classic for families is dressing up as different characters from the same movie. Some ideas include:

  • Star Wars (Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Wookies, R2D2, etc)
  • The Lion King (Mufasa, Sarabi, Scar, Nala, Simba, etc)
  • The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, The Wizard, etc)
  • Harry Potter (Harry, Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, Dobby, etc)
  • Inside Out (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, etc)

Need more ideas? Disney or Pixar movies are a great place to start! The good thing about that too is that there are often many character-themed costumes readily available for kids.

A Family Adventure

Another theme idea to coordinate your family could be dressing as though you’re going to a certain event. Here are some ideas!

  • African Safari: pull on your khakis and grab your binoculars, and dress your kiddos as safari animals!
  • It’s a Circus: tight-rope walkers, trapeze artists, weight-lifters, and show masters; this theme has plenty of options!
  • Zoo: lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Dress the family up as zoo animals and zoo keepers.
  • Lifeguards + Sharks: grab some red swim gear and a whistle, and dress the kids up as sharks!

Matchy-Matchy

These are some ideas for the whole family to dress up as the same thing!

  • Robots: grab some cardboard boxes and paint, and put together robot cosumes for the family
  • Out of this World: dress up as astronauts and/or aliens
  • Under the Sea: dress up as scuba divers and/or sea creatures
  • Avengers, Assemble!: dress up as superheroes

We hope this provides you and your family with plenty of inspiration for Halloween this year. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! Happy Trick-or-Treating!
